Qualification Summary
The Level 3 Certificate in Language Skills aims to accredit learning taking place within a normal learning environment, across a range of languages, and allowing for the use of authentic materials and contexts. The qualification also aims to widen access through the style of the assessment, which is inclusive and attractive to all learners, especially those who would not be comfortable with a formal examination approach. The flexible style also helps fulfil the purpose of making the qualification appropriate for learners using their skills in a range of work environments, and for individual purposes such as travel and communication with speakers of other languages at home, as well as an aim in itself, for lifelong learning. Achievement of all four skills units allows learners to acquire a broad competence and appropriate skills.
The qualification is designed so that tutors can choose materials related to a particular area of vocabulary to suit the needs and aspirations of their learners, for example the workplace, younger people's interests or travel. The continuous assessment method within the qualification design allows learners to establish their competence in a safe and authentic manner.
This new QCF qualification is a replacement for the NQF Level 3 Certificate in Language Skills.
The qualification thus also supports The National Centre for Languages' (CILT) stated aims of building capacity in language skills across all phases of education and enhancing the competitiveness of UK industry.
