Assessment, Internal Verification and Standardisation
Quality Assurance in this context includes a number of key aspects including
- Assessment practice
- Internal Verification
- Standardisation
The principles and methods of Assessment, Internal Verification and Standardisation will be discussed with you when you undertake your centre recognition
Assessment
Assessment is the judgement of evidence showing that learning has taken place and confirming that learning outcomes have been achieved.
The principles of assessment are that the evidence should be
- Authentic
- Valid
And that assessment decisions should be
- Reliable and consistent
- Fit for purpose
- Inclusive
It is essential that assessment is carried out in a structured way, both for the benefit of the learners and in order that effective Internal Verification can take place.
Internal Verification
An effective Internal Verification system ensures assessment practices and decisions are regularly reviewed to ensure consistency and fairness and evaluated to ensure the validity of the award of credit.
Standardisation
The purpose of standardisation is to ensure consistency in the application of levels and credits across OCN provision and to ensure consistency of practice in assessment and verification. As a centre you will be required to participate as appropriate in local, regional and national standardisation which will be explained to you when necessary.
OCN North East Region offer a variety of methods for training and support to help you meet your responsibilities for all areas of the quality assurance process and to which you are encouraged to access. These will be explained in full by both your Quality Reviewer and Development Manager.
Further information including a full training programme along with the aims and objectives of individual sessions can be seen here
The guidance document on standardisation below explains the principles of standardisation, sets out the requirements for all OCN centres, and provides useful information to help a centre run their own standardisation events.
